Late payments may incur the following costs if a reminder to pay is ignored.
For contracts dated on or after 7th August 2002, interest is calculated at a rate of 8% above the ‘reference rate' in place on the day the debt became overdue. The ‘reference rate' is set for six months at a time: the Bank of England base rate in place on the 31st December is the ‘reference rate' for the period 1st January to 30th June and the Bank of England base rate in place on 30th June is the ‘reference rate' for the period 1st July to 31st December.
When a payment is made it goes towards the compensation first (if applicable), followed by the interest and then the original debt. If the full amount owed is not paid, then interest continues to accrue on the whole debt until it is settled in full. . For all contracts, the interest accrues on a daily basis until the debt is paid and the same rate applies for the entire time the debt remains outstanding, regardless of changes in the base rate or reference rate. When a payment is made it goes towards the compensation first (if applicable), followed by the interest and then the original debt. If the full amount owed is not paid, then interest continues to accrue on the whole debt until it is settled in full.
